Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:

  • Vodafone Group plc. (VOD): shares of British cell phone company rallied 6.71% to $21 as it plans to sell its Japanese unit, to Softbank, a technology investment company who also invests in Internet giant such as Yahoo. The stock was the eighth heaviest traded on NYSE with 21.8 million shares.
  • Bookham Inc. (BKHM): shares of San Jose, CA based optical network component maker soared 12.95% or 97 cents to new 52 weeks high of $8.46 following positive comments from Jim Cramer and his TheStreet.com. 7.6 million shares, almost 5 times average volumn, have exchanged hands.

Stocks Drop on Heavy Volumn:

  • Novell Inc. (NOVL): the Waltham, MA based software company posted on Thursday posted disappointing first quarter result and second quarter warning which send the stock down 17% to $7.9 per share. The stock was the eleventh most heaviest traded on Nasdaq with 36.8 million shares.
  • SFB International Inc. (SFCC): shares of Miami, Florida based drug development service provider plunged 16.06% or $3.58 to $18.71 per share as the company delayed earning result and withdrew 2006 outlook. The stock was the third leading loser on Nasdaq with 9 million shares.
