Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:
  • First Solar Inc. (FSLR): the Phoenix based solar modules maker made a decent run on the first day of trading, up 23.7% to $24.74 per share from IPO price of $20. The financials for the year is also strong, up more than twice for the nine months ended this year compared with same period of 2005. The stock was the third leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 18.36 million shares traded.
  • Conor Medsystems Inc. (CONR): shres of Menlo Park, CA based controlled vascular drug delivery technologies company surged 18.75% to $32.68 per share as J&J is buying the company for $33.5 per share. The stock was the seventh leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 21.72 million shares traded.
  • United States Steel Corp.(X): shares of Pittsburgh based steel maker rose 9.29% to $70.57 per share on buyout and merger activity in the sector. The stock was the top performer on NYSE today with 12.77 million shares traded.

Stocks Drop on Heavy Volumn:

  • Birch Mountain Resources Ltd. (BMD): shares of Canadian industrial minerals company tumbled 13.1% to $2.52 per share as the company clarifies sales results reported on November 13. The stock reached new 52 weeks low and was the third leading decliner on AMEX today with 7.5 million shares traded.
  • AnnTaylor Stores Corp.(ANN): shares of women's clothing retailer lost 7.84% to $36.57 per share on margin concerns on slowing sweater sales. The stock was the third leading decliner on NYSE with 7 million shares traded.
