Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:

  • Florida Rock Industries Inc. (FRK): shares of Jacksonville, Florida based construction materials company soared 41.7% to $66.54 per share after Vulcan Materials is buying the company for $4.6 billion. The stock was the biggest winner on NYSE today with 9.75 million shares traded.
  • Insmed Inc. (INSM): shares of Glen Allen, VA based drug maker for metabolic diseases jumped 29.66% to $1.53 per share despite no major news announcement. The stock has gained 50% in just two days as last Thursday the stock was still trading at $1.01 per share. The stock was the third leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 12.02 million shares traded.
  • Empire Resorts Inc. (NYNY): shares of horse racing track operator surged 26.3% to $12.63 per share after the company received approval from governor of New York for proposed casino to be built in Sullivan County. The stock was the fifth leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 6.6 million shares traded.

Stocks Drop on Heavy Volumn:

  • BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. (BMRN): shares of Novato, CA based biopharmaceutical company tumbled 11.98% to $18 per share after the company's hypertension drug shows disappointing study results. The stock was the second leading decliner on Nasdaq with 11.86 million shares traded.
  • Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI): shares of Houston based oil and natural gas drilling equipment provider tumbled 9.38% to $65.19 per share on disappointing fourth quarter report. The stock was the leading decliner on NYSE today with 23.53 million shares traded.
