Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:

  • Cell Genesys Inc. (CEGE): shares of South San Francisco, CA based biotechnology company surged 20% to $4.2 per share on positive news from cancer drug maker Dendreon Copr (below). The stock was the fourth leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 19.3 million shares traded.
  • Dendreon Corp.(DNDN): after rising 13% yesterday as the Seattle, WA based biotechnology company was seeking its cancer drug approval, buyers rushed in today and pushed the stock up 147.7% to $12.93 per share after FDA panel endorsed the company's prostate cancer vaccine. The stock was the biggest winner and the second heaviest traded on Nasdaq today with 92.58 million shares traded.

Stocks Drop on Heavy Volumn:

  • Global Payments Inc. (GPN): shares of Atlanta, Georgia based payment processing and money transfer services provider tumbled 13.05% to $34.06 per share after the company cut its revenue estimates for the year. The stock was the leading decliner on NYSE today with 11.5 million shares traded.
