Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:
- AVI Biopharma Inc. (AVII): shares of Portland, Oregon based potential bird flu drug developer surged 15.78% or $1.04 to $7.63 per share as the company plans to apply to Food and Drug Administration for bird flu drug after lab studies showed drug effective in stopping the replication of bird flu virus. The stock was the seventh leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 12 million shares traded, about four times average volumn.
- TiVo Inc.(TIVO): shares of Alviso, CA based digital video recorders(DVRs) maker rose 9.81% or 71 cents to $7.95 per share as the company began patent-inringement lawsuit against EchoStar Communications(DISH) on Wednesday. However in the after hour action the stock was down 2.52% or 20 cents as Cablevision plans to offer digital video recording service to replace DVR boxes. About five times average volumn of 7.9 million shares have exchanged hands.
Stocks Drop on Heavy Volumn:
- Sigmatel Inc. (SGTL): shares of Austin, Texas MP3 players chips maker plunged 12.54% to new 52 weeks low of $8.86 after the company issued warning for its first quarter revenue. The stock has dropped almost 80% for the year as it was still trading at $45 per share last March. The stock was the biggest loser on Nasdaq today with 10 million shares traded, almost 9 times average volumn.
