Stocks Up On Heavy Volumn:

  • Nordstrom Inc. (JWN): shares of major department store operator surged 12.09% to $34.21 per share after reporting better than expected 22% rise in third quarter profits. Despite lowering the fourth quarter profit outlook, buyers takes the positive news since the stock price has been hit hard lately. It is still trading at almost half of the 52 weeks high of $60 per share earlier in February. The stock was the fourth leading gainer on NYSE today with 18 million shares traded.
  • Blue Coat Systems Inc. (BCSI): shares of internet security hardware and software solutions provider surged 12.71% to $37.34 per share on upbeat third quarter earnings forecast. The stock was the twelveth leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 6.8 million shares traded.

Stock Down on Heavy Volumn:

  • E-Trade Financial Corporatioin (ETFC): it is another doomsday for the online discount investment brokerage firm as negative comments from analyst send the stock down another 19% to $3.8 per share back near its 52 weeks low. Analyst says E-Trade's competitors are luring its customers away. The stock was the sixth leading decliner and the second heaviest traded on Nasdaq toay with 103 million shares traded.
  • Freddie Mac(FRE): trouble continues for the government sponsored loans maker as shares plunged 28.69% to new 52 weeks low of $26.74 per share as the company posted net loss of $2 billion in the third quarter, its largest ever quarterly loss. The stock was the sixth leading decliner on NYSE today with 84.6 million shares traded.
