Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:
- Axelis Technologies Inc. (ACLS): shares of Beverly, MA based capital equipment manufacturer for te semiconductor industry surged 14.07% or $0.85 to $6.89 per share after the company announced better-than-expected outlook despite falling profit for the first quarter. The stock was the eleventh leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 9.5 million shares traded, about five times average volumn.
- El Paso Corp. (EP): shares of Houston, Texas based nation's leading gas pipeline operator jumped 12.53% or $1.69 to new 52 weeks high of $15.18 per share after the company reported record first quarter earning which went trippled. The stock was the second biggest winner on NYSE today with 27.2 million shares exchanged hands, also the fourth heaviest traded on NYSE.
Stocks Drop on Heavy Volumn:
- Bookham Inc. (BKHM): shares of San Jose, CA based optical network component maker plunged 20.38% or $1.28 to $5 per share after negative sales report from rival JDSU. However in the after hour the company posted a narrower loss in the third quarter and 7% revenue increase. The stock was the biggest loser on Nasdaq today with 8.5 million shares traded or four times average volumn.
- Chemtura Coporation (CEM): shares of Fort Worth, Texas based furniture and bed and bath accessories retailer tumbled 13.13% or $1.61 to $10.65 per share after the company reported falling first quarter profit due to merger costs although the revenue has increased 55%. The stock was the leading decliner on NYSE today with 13.4 million shares traded or seven times average volumn.
