Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:
  • Sierra Wireless Inc. (SWIR): shares of Richmond, Canada based wireless modem maker surged 28.53% or $3.98 to new 52 weeks high of $17.93 per share on analysts upgrade after the company reported profit for the first quarter compared to loss in the previous year. In addition the company also issued positive forecast which beat Wall Street estimate. The stock was the second biggest winner on Nasdaq today with 12 million shares traded, about 22 times average volumn.
  • Arch Coal Inc.(ACI): shares of St. Louis, MO based coal mining company rose 9.73% or $8.23 to new 52 weeks high of $92.85 per share as the company report soaring first quarter income of $60.7 million, almost 10 times last year's net income of $6.6 million. The stock is the sevent leading advancer on NYSE today with 6.4 million shares traded, almost 4 times average volumn.

Stocks Drop on Heavy Volumn:

  • Affymetrix Inc. (AFFX): shares of Santa Clara, CA based genetic analysis product maker tumbled 14.32% or $4.85 to new 52 weeks low of $29.03 per share on sharp decline in net income for the first quarter. The stock was the seventh leading decliner on Nasdaq today with 12.59 million shares traded, about 11 times average volumn.
  • Ford Motor Co. (F): shares Dearborn, MI based number 2 auto giant dropped 7.92% or 63 cents to near 52 weeks low of $7.32 per share after the company swung to a $1.2 billion loss in the first quarter compared with net income of $1.2 billion in the same time of the previous year as the company began restructuring by eliminating 30,000 jobs. The stock was the third leading decliner and second heaviest traded on NYSE today with 52 million shares exchanged hands, twice the average volumn.
