Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:

  • Vivo Participacoes S.A. (VIV): shares of Sao Paulo, Brazil based wireless service company rose 8.16% to $3.58 per share despite posting a wider quarterly loss. The stock was the third best performer on NYSE today with 10 million shares exchanged hands.
  • Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (VRTX): shares of Cambridge, MA based cancer and hepatitis C drug maker surged 17.62% to $40.66 per share on positive data on its hepatitis C drug. The stock was the third leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 14 million shares exchanged hands.

Stocks Drop on Heavy Volumn:

  • Silicon Image, Inc. (SIMG): shares of Sunnyvale, CA based semiconductor company tumbled 17.05% to $11.77 per share on falling third quarter income and weak revenue outlook for the fourth quarter. The stock was the sixth leading decliner on Nasdaq today with 6.48 million shares traded.
  • Celestica Inc. (CLS): shares of Toronto, Canada based electronic manufacturing service provider dropped 13.46% to $10.16 per share on analyst downgrade on weak fourth quarter outlook. The stock was the third leading decliner on NYSE today with 6.27 million shares traded.
