Stock on the Move - December 30

Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn
  • Applied Digital Solution (ADSX): shares of Delray Beach, FL based security products for consumer, commercial and government were up 26 cents or 10% today on spin-off of VeriChip subsidiary. The stock has been trading near 52 week low between $2.5 and $3 per share for these two months. Top executives have been purchasing the stocks since August.
  • GlobelTel Communications Corp. (GTE): shares of Florida based VoIP equipment maker were up $1.49 or 68% to $3.68 with 23 millions shares traded, 10 times normal volumn. The company has won a contract worth $600 million to install broadband phone servies to 30 cities in Russia. The stock has been trading between the $1 to $5 range for this year.

Stock Drops on Heavy Volumn

  • Syneron Medical Ltd. (ELOS): the aesthetic medical products maker saw its share drop $3.94 or 11% today on analyst's concern over the company's fourth-quarter revenue and downgrade on new competition. The stock of the Israel based company has just reached 52 week high of $45 per share in early December but is now trading 30% less at $31.75 per share.

Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:
  • Neopharm Inc.(NEOL): shares of Lake Forest, IL based cancer drug maker surged $4.15 or 52% to $12.1 per share as the company got OK to proceed late stage trial of brain cancer drug. The news gave the biotech firm a big boost as the stock has been trading near 52 week low. The stock was the top percentage gainer on Nasdaq and was the nineth in terms of volumn with 15 million shares traded.
  • Repligen Corp.(RGEN): the Maryland based biotech firm announced claims to a patent for a componenet in a FDA approved drug and send the share up $0.61 or 19% in one day with 3.3 million shares traded. The stock is now back to its 52 week high of close to $4 per share.

Stock Drop on Heavy Volumn:

  • OfficeMax Inc.(OMX): share of major office supplies retailer was down 11% or $3.17 to $24.35 per share as one major shareholder may reduce position and would not push for management change. The stock is now trading at new 52 week low with 3.8 million shares traded today.
  • Mercury Interactive(MERQE): the Mountain View, CA based enterprice software firm will miss the 2Q and 3Q filing deadline and may face delisting from Nasdaq. The worried investors send the stock down $2.37 or 7% to $28.99 per share. The plunge ends the recent rally which started as the stock was trading at its 52 weeks low of $25 per share in November.

Stock Rise on Heavy Volumn:
  • Atherogenics Inc. (AGIX) $19.74/+19.64%/13 millions : shares of Alpharetta, GA based drug maker surged 19% to $19.74 per share after receiving 1 billion deal from AstraZeneca, third-largest drug maker in Europe. From the deal, AstraZeneca will have the right to AGI-1067, a drug aiming for heart attacks and strokes. The stock has now gained almost 100% from 52 week low of $10.74 per share in April this year.
  • BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Inc. (BCRX) $17.59/+15.65%/14 millions: shares of Birmingham, AL based cancer drug maker rose 15% as FDA gives green light to test potential bird flu treatment. The drug will be an alternative to Tamiflu. The stock has gained more than 400% from 52 week low of $3.7 in May this year.

Stock Drop on Heavy Volumn:

  • Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (BBBY) $36.27/-12.05%/29 million: shares of home furnishing and household items superstores dropped 12% as the current-quarter forecast fell short of analysts expection despite decent earning. The stock is down $10 from 52 week high.
  • Hudson Highland Group Inc. (HHGP) $18.92/-28.17%/5.6 million: shares of New York based professional staffing firm plunged 28% to $18.92 on lower outlook as the company sees soften demand on staffing in North America, Australia and New Zealand. The stock was still at its 52 week high of $27.85 per share last week.

  • StemCells Inc(STEM) $3.91/+13.99%/6 million: shares of the Palo Alto, CA based biotech firm which focuses on stem cell related technology soared 14% with volumn almost four times more than average volumn.
  • Aastrom Biosciences Inc. (ASTM) $2.28/+8.57%/5.7 million: Stem cell stocks are having a hot day today as most major stem cell players are up with STEM and ASTM both up significantly. ASTM is seeing 5 times average volumn today with stock ends up 8% with no news.

Stocks Down on Heavy Volumn:

  • SeraCare Life Science(SRLS) $10.4/-47.98%/11 millions: shares of Oceanside, CA based firm plunged 47% percent as the company delays fourth quarter report on audit concert. The stock is now trading near its 52 week low which was seen back in April this year.
  • General Motors(GM) $19.85/-5.7%/34 millions: shares of Detroit based mega automaker dropped almost 6% on report that GM is losing market share and recall of 425,000 vans due to seat belts problem. Increasing worries that the giant US based automaker may file bankruptcy has sent the stock 50% lower since the beginning of this year.

Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:

  • Hauppauge Digital (HAUP) $5.51 +37.75% 7.5 million : the Hauppauge, NY based maker of digital/analog TV receiver and personal video is the spot light on Nasdaq today as it tops the price gainers list. The company's tv receiver allow users to watch TV on their personal PC. However today it is the company's Wing software which enables users to record TV shows on PC for playback on Sony PSP and Apple's iPOD that sends the stock up 37% per share. The stock has bonced back from 52 week low of $3 per share in November.
  • Phizer (PFE) $24.32 +7.71% 143 million : New York based mega drug maker surged 7.7% with 143 million shares traded, the heaviest traded stock among NYSE and Nasdaq. The U.S. court victory which block threat to Phizer's cholesterol-buster drug attracted investors and lifted the stock as high as $25.2 per share, a plus 10% appreciation. The stock hasn't been doing well this year but has made come back recently.

  • Pharmacyclics(PCYC) $3.3 -64.13% 17 million : shares of Sunnyvale, CA based cancer drug maker plunged 64% as final phase clinical trial of the experimental lung cancer drug failed. The stock is now trading at new 52 week low at $3.3 per share.

Stock Rising on Heavy Volumn

  • Adobe System(ADBE) $38.88 +11.14% 28,749,544: shares of San Jose based software maker surged 11% to year high on strong quarterly report as the quarterly net profit rose 38% on strong demand of its document management and design software. The revenue also rose 19% to $507 million. The stock is showing strong upward momentum entring into the end of the year.
  • Animas Corp.(PUMP) $24.03 +32.03% 7,047,160: the West Chester, PA based maker of insulin pumps saw its stock sky-rocketted 32% after announcement of Aquisition by Johnson & Johnson(JNJ). J&J would pay $24.5 for the 22 million Animas outstanding shares. After the news shares of J&J also rose 1.2% to $60.86.

Stock Dropping on Heavy Volumn

  • OraSure Tehnologies Inc. (OSUR) $8.46 -25.59% 13,022,601: shares of Bethlehem, PA based maker of oral specimen collection devices plunged 25% on downgrades and clinics halts use of OraSure Test. The stock has been falling from its 52 week high of $14 per share sine early this month.
  • SFBC International Inc. (SFCC) $13.14 -16.73% 14,267,094: stock of Miami, FL based drug development service company dropped 16% on heavy volumn on downgrades. The stock has fall 65% from November high of $40 per share.

Stocks Rising on Heavy Volumn:
  • Abgenix Inc. (ABGX) $21.68 +47.99% 61,727,799 : stock price of Fremont, CA based biopharmaceutical company on cancer treatment has surged 47% today on announcement of merger agreement in which Amgen (AMGN) will pay $22.5 per share to Abgenix. The announcement also help Amgen to close at $80.44 today, up $3.66 or 4.77% from yesterday's close. Abgenix ends the day around $21.68 per share, almost a dollar short of merger price. The stock has gained more than 200% from the 52 weeks low of $6.45 per share in April this year. The stock is the top one price gainer(%) on Nasdaq and fifth highest in volumn traded.
  • Spherix Inc. (SPEX) $3.91 +22.19% 6,459,236 : Biotech firm Spherix saw its share up more than 22% to $3.91 per share following Eupopean approval for its sweetener in variety of foods. The suger substitute has also been approved in United States, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. The stock which was still trading in the one dollar range two weeks ago began the rally on December 6 on FDA approval of late stage trial of its diabetes drug. The stock had surged to as much as $5.85 per share during the rally. The stock is the sixth biggest price gainer on Nasdaq.

Stocks Dropping in Heavy Volumn:

  • KOS Pharmaceuticals Inc. (KOSP) $50.86 -27.27% 12,884,508 : shares of New Jersey based pharmaceutical company KOS plunged 27% as rival drug maker Merck announcing development of cholesterol treatment drug which will direct compete with KOS. Shares of KOS has dropped below both the 50 day and 200 day moving average, a bad sign for the stock.
  • Activision Inc. (ATVI) $13.15 -8.04% 28,999,080 : shares of Santa Monica, CA based interactive entertainment software maker (including famous online game such as Quake) dropped 8% today on sales and earning warning for third and fourth quarters. The stock was downgraded by Bear Stearns in November 22 after the stock has hit 52 week high of $18.03 per share. The stock was the nineth heaviest traded on Nasdaq.

Stock rising on heavy volumn:

  • 8x8 Inc (EGHT) 2.52 +18% 12,707.237: shares of the VOIP(Voice over Internet Protocal) was up as announcement of mega contract from Bellsouth on Friday still fueled the upward movement. The stock was trading at $1.2 before the announcement and sky-rocketted as much as $3 in the after hour trade on Friday.
  • Arena Pharmaceutical (ARNA) 13.48 +18% 6,995,878: Arena Pharmaceutical shares up almost 20% as the company report postive results from clinical trial of the company's obesity treatment. The stock was trading around $5 in April this year and since the price has took off and hit the 52 week high today at $13.48 per share.

Stock dropping on heavy volumn:

  • SciClone Pharmaceutical (SCLN) 2.31 -40% 9,301,744: Contrary to Arena Pharmaceutical's successful drug trial, SciClone's poor trial data send the stock down 40% as the hepatitis C treament proved to be ineffective. The stock is off its 52 week hight of $8 per share in August this year.
  • Matek Biosciences (MATK) 23.87 -18.39% 7,917,537: maker of nutritional oils used in baby formula saw its stock price plunge 18% as current quarter guidance fell short of expectation. The stock has dropped more than 60% from its high of $70 per share earlier this year in March.
