Stocks On The Move - January 17

Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:
  • Star Scientific Inc. (STSI): shares of Chester, Virginia based tobacco curing technology company soared 29.79% to 52 weeks high of $4.4 per share as the company is expecting a decisions soon for a patent infringement lawsuit against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco. The stock was the leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 9.27 million shares traded.
  • Mills Corp. (MLS): shares of shopping center REIT surged for second day in a row with another 26.39% gain following 17% yesterday. The stock is now trading at $22.46 per share back to the level last seen in August of last year. However as the stock is acquired for $21 per share by Brookfield we probably won't see anymore upside. The stock was the biggest winner on NYSE today with 20.2 million shares traded also making it the fourteenth heaviest traded.

Stocks Drop on Heavy Volumn:

  • Rackable Systems Inc. (RACK): shares of Milpitas, CA based computer storage system company plunged 38.37% to $19.98 per share after the company issued warning that it will miss Wall Street's expectation for the fourth-quarter. The stock was the leading decliner and the twelveth heaviest traded on Nasdaq today with 30 million shares traded.
