Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:
- Whittier Energy Corp. (WHIT): shares of Houston based oil and gas company soared 22.68% to $10.71 per share after the comapny agreed to be bought by Sterling Energy for $145 million or $11 per share. The stock was the third leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 3.3 million shares traded.
- Callaway Golf Co. (ELY): shares of leading golf clubs and golf balls maker rose 11.89% to $15.71 per share as the company is expected to report 2006 earnings topping Wall Street estimates on lowering expenses and rising sales probably due to warm winter. The stock was the seconnd leading gainer on NYSE today with 2.86 million shares traded.
- Hoku Scientific Inc. (HOKU): after surging 122.58% in the previous session, the fuel cell and solar power component company gave up 19% of its gain to $5.56 per share. The stock was the fourth leading decliner on Nasdaq today with 15.5 million shares traded.
- Coldwater Creek Inc. (CWTR): shares of Sandpoint, Idaho based retailer of women's apparel and jewelry tumbled 12.33% to $20.7 per share as the company is lowering its fourth-quarter outlook below analyst expectations due to weak sales during the holidays. The stock was the fifth leading decliner on Nasdaq today with 12.33 million shares traded.
