Stocks On The Move - January 22
Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:
- Sigmatel Inc. (SGTL): shares of Austin, Texas based MP3 players chips maker rose 10.63% to $4.06 per share after Samsung Electronics agreed to use the company's audio technology in its televisions. The stock was the eighth leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 3.14 million shares traded.
- Swift Transportation Co. Inc.(SWFT): shares of Phoenix, Arizona based truckload carrier company surged 9.08% to $30.26 per share after the company agreed to a buyout by its shareholder for $2.74 billion or $31.55 per share. The stock was the sixteenth leading advancer on Nasdaq today with heavy volumn of 15.5 million shares traded.
Stocks Drop on Heavy Volumn:
- Star Scientific Inc. (STSI): last week the Chester, Virginia based tobacco curing technology company was still trading at 52 weeks high of $4.4 per share as the company was expecting a decisions soon for a patent infringement lawsuit against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco. However after the court ruled in favor over Reynolds, shares of STSI plunged all the way to $1.16 today, losing 75% in just two days. The 32% drop today makes the stock the worst on Nasdaq with 20.76 million shares traded.
- Gateway Inc. (GTW): shares of Irvine, CA based PC maker lost 6.28% to $1.94 per share as the market retreat on rising oil price. The stock was the eighth leading gainer on NYSE today with 12.11 million shares traded.
