Stocks Rise on Heavy Volumn:
  • Molecular Devices Corp. (MDCC): shares of Sunnyvale, CA based bioanalytical measurement system manufacturer jumped 46.86% to %35.07 per share as MDS is buying the company for $615 million or $35.5 per share. The stock was the second biggest winner on Nasdaq today with 6.39 million shares exchanged hands.
  • Synargo Technologies Inc. (SYGR): shares of Houston based wastewater treatment plants operator surged 27.68% to new 52 weeks high of $5.72 per share after the company agreed to be bought by Carlyle Group for $462 million or $5.76 per share. The stock was the fifth leading gainer on Nasdaq today with 9.06 million shares traded.
  • Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. (ABY): shares of Montreal, Canada based newsprint and commercial print papers maker soared 26.14% to $3.33 per share on merger with Bowater Inc. The combined company would create annual revenue of $7.9 billion with market capitalization of $2.4 billion. The stock was the second leading gainer on NYSE today with 20.32 million shares traded.
  • Bowater Inc. (BOW): another winner of the $7.9 billion dollar merger is Bowater with shares surged 23.88% to $27.44 per share. The stock was the third leading gainer following ABY on NYSE today with 14.98 million shares traded.
