  • Dollar General Corp. (DG): shares of Goodlettsville, TN based discount retailer lost 6.04% to $15.7 per share after the company announced closing of 400 stores. The stock was the second leading decliner on NYSE today with 14 million shares exchanged hands.

  • United States Steel Corp.(X): shares of Pittsburgh based steel maker rose 9.29% to $70.57 per share on buyout and merger activity in the sector. The stock was the top performer on NYSE today with 12.77 million shares traded.

Stocks On The Move - IRSN, RMBS, ENT, ZVUE, WSM

The market is hot. So hot that it overshadows the slowdown in the housing sector. The Dow is still at 52 weeks high rising 54 points to 12,305 and Nasdaq is still on the rising gaining another 6 points to 2,449.

On the Nasdaq side advancers barely beat the decliners by a slim margin with 1,525 stocks going up and 1,507 stocks going down. Leading the way on Nasdaq is Irvine Sensors Corp. (
IRSN) which gone more than doubled to $2.39 per share after the defense and security mini-electronic parts maker received new orders worth $16.6 million. This ends the long slide in stock price since January of this year.

Another big winner on Nasdaq is the memory chip maker Rambus Inc. (
RMBS) which soared 30.45% or $5.07 to $21.72 per share on speculation that the company would be barely affected by a lawsuit filed by FTC. The stock came in third of the top perfomer and was the nineth heaviest traded on Nasdaq with 36 million shares traded.

The bull ruled the New York Stock Exchange with 1,746 advancers while only 1,5o9 stocks went down. Leading the way was the Canadian oil and gas trust company Enterra Energy Trust(
ENT) which surged 16.71% to $8.73 per share on bullish comment by Jim Cramer on his Mad Money show on Wednesday. The stock this year alone has lost more than half of the value.

Going opposite way to most stocks today was media players maker Handheld Entertainment(
ZVUE) which plunged 20% to $4.88 per share after announcement that additional 3.2 million shares would become free trading, adding total floating shares to 6.3 million.

Going south in NYSE was specialty furniture store Williams-Sonoma Inc. (WSM) which went down 9.89% to $31.7 per share after the company lowered it's fourth-quarter and fiscal 2006 guidance due to poor housing market. The stock was the second leading decliner with 9 million shares exchanged hands.

For the third quarter the company reported profit of $13.6 million compared with net loss of $2.7 million in the same quarter of previous year. The stock was the top performer on NYSE today with 8.08 million shares traded.

  • Home Solutions of America Inc. (HSOA): the Dallas, Texas based home remodeling service company tumbled 14.8% to $5.18 per share after the company cut its revenue forecast for the year. The stock is now back near its 52 week low. The stock was the sixth leading decliner on Nasdaq today with 6.31 million shares traded.
  • Bodisen Biotech Inc.(BBC): shares of Chinese pesticides maker plunged for the second straight session and are now only half of the value of last Friday's close of $10.74. The stock today plummetted 30.67% to $5.9 per share after it received letter from Amex yesterday saying that the stock is not compliant with certain standard. The stock was the biggest loser on AMEX with 3.85 shares traded.

The market began the week with positive note with Dow rose 23 points to 12131 and Nasdaq gained 16 points to 2046 as Oil prices dropped below $59 per barrel.

Among the winners are drug maker Isis Pharmaceuticals(ISIS) which soared 19.75% to $12.43 per share on two successful mid-stage clinical trials of its cholestrol-lowering drug and leading credit card company MasterCard Incorporated(MA) which rose 8.24% or $7.35 to $96.55 per share after Sam's Club began accepting the company's credit cards. Isis Pharmaceuticals was also among the leaders in volumn with 24.6 million shares. The best performer today was Chinese business software company E-Future Information (EFUT) which surged 48.27% to $29.49 per share on first day of trading.

The advancers outnumbering the decliners on both NYSE and Nasdaq. However to shareholder of biotechnology company Illumina Inc. (ILMN) today was not the day to celebrate as shares tumbled 11.67% to $38.91 on four times average volumn of 5.6 million shares after the company agreed to buy Solexa for $14 per share. Another Chinese technology company, Telestone Technologies(TSTC) went the opposite way to its surging fellow rookie as shares plunged 24.73% to $4.14 per share after filing third quarter result.

  • Tanox Inc. (TNOX): the Houston based drug maker became the best performer on Nasdaq today as Genentech is buying the company for $919 million or $20 per share. Shares rose 44.79% to near buyout price of $19.75 with 28 times average volumn of 8 million shares traded.
  • NYSE Group Inc. (NYX): the operator of New York Stock Exchange is among the leading gainers on its exchange today on speculation that it could remove trading fee caps. Shares rose 7.9% to new high of $94.48 per share. The stock has almost gone nine-fold in two years as it was trading as low as $11.5 on it's first month of trading back in August 2004. The stock was the seventh leading gainer with 11.9 million shares exchanged hands.

  • Scottish Re Group Ltd. (SCT): the Bermuda based life insurance company continued it's slide for the fifth day in a row as it lost another 20.2% to 6.4 per share after the company posted third quarter loss late Thursday. The reinsurer for the third quarter posted third quarter net loss of $27.4 million compared to net income of $34.4 million in the same quarter of previous year. The stock was the biggest decliner on NYSE today with 8.77 million shares traded.
  • Capstone Turbine Corp.(CPST): this has been a rough year for the Chatsworth, CA based microturbine generator maker as shares reached near 52 week low again after reporting second quarter loss in the aftermarket on Thursday. Shares tumbled 13.58% to $1.4 per share. The stock was the twelveth leading decliner on Nasdaq today with 4.94 million shares traded.
